World Discipleship Ministries
What is Worldview Discipleship? Why is it important?
No one would question that we live in a very different world today than just 40 years age. Our culture is in a freefall of ideas that will lead to our demise. Why isn’t the church making an impact on our culture? The answer is that our culture has invaded the church. Today our young people are growing up in a world that is increasingly hostile to Christianity. The world’s view of the church is that it has nothing to say concerning “real life”; it only tells us spiritual things. For the most part, the church has bought into this same thinking. It has specialized on spiritual truth and has left everything else to the world’s opinion. Our young people are learning that they get spiritual stories at church, but the real facts that matter are found at school.
Research by George Barna states that 2/3 of the young people that call themselves born again will turn from their faith by the time they graduate from college. Whether we are witnessing or teaching believers, we must address the issues that face people today. We need to answer the tough questions that cause doubts in the Word of God and connect the Bible back to reality. The Bible not only gives us spiritual truth; it is our foundation for history, science, social issues, politics, economics, etc. Worldview Discipleship Ministries was created to help the church respond to the needs of this changing culture.
Doc Noebel, President of Summit Ministries, says: “A Biblical worldview approach to life and learning has never been more needed than in today’s pluralistic/postmodern culture. Christian students face hostility to their faith from one side, and apathy to anything of importance from the other side. And, sadly, the casualties are high. Let’s face it: many Christian students have no idea why they believe what they believe. When it comes to a wide range of topics, such as politics, education, economics, religion, and social issues, test results show that Christian students respond more like secular humanists than followers of Christ. And what is more alarming is that the trend over the last ten years is moving toward a greater degree of secularization.” (http://familyactionorganization.wordpress.com/2007/10/29/why-students-abandon-their-faith/)
Worldview Discipleship Ministries Goals
- Motivate parents to train their children with a Biblical worldview from childhood so we will not lose them in college. As we teach our children spiritual truths, we must answer their tough questions concerning the authority and relevance of scripture.
- Teach believers how to witness to the postmodern world.
- Encourage the church to develop its own worldview discipleship from childhood to adult. We must disciple believers to know what they believe, why they believe it, and how to impact their culture with the truths of scripture.
- Recommend and provide materials such as books, videos, and curriculum to equip parents and the church for the task.
Worldview Discipleship Ministries Topics
The Gillespies are committed to Worldview Discipleship in the local church, Christian schools and the college campus. Topics for training, appropriate for Sunday School, Sunday services, Bible studies or seminar training, include:
- A brief Biblical view of history from the cross to the present illustrating the devastating effects of a non-biblical worldview.
- A comparison of humanist and Biblical worldviews and how one's worldviews affect their choices and thus our culture.
- A Biblical view of government and economics. Without mentioning current personalities or programs, solid Biblical principles are set forth so people can know that what they believe is not just opinion, but the truth from God’s Word that is vital to this nation’s survival.
